SIOUX CITY, IOWA
Sioux City, Iowa was founded in 1854 in Woodbury and Plymouth counties & has a population of 82,684 as of 2010 making it the fourth largest city in the state. It sits on the banks of the Missouri River in the NW corner of Iowa, often called the Tri-State area because it touches Nebraska to the south and South Dakota to the north. This region plus the smaller surrounding towns are often referred as the Siouxland area. Plymouth County is not considered part of the metropolitan Sioux City even though some of the city spreads over into the north and northwestern parts of Plymouth County.
Sioux City is home to American Popcorn Company, Tyson Fresh Meats, Curly's Foods, MidAmerican Energy, Morningside College, Briar Cliff University, Tri-State Nursing, Mercy Medical Center, St Luke's Regional Medical Center and 185th Air Refueling Wing.
In the downtown area is the Sioux City Art Center; also the Sioux City Public Museum has been recently relocated downtown. The Sergeant Floyd Monument, a National Historic Landmark, with its 100-foot obelisk sits high on a river bluff overlooking the Mighty Mo, commemorating the burial site of Sgt. Charles Floyd who died on the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Along the Riverfront is the riverboat casino, Anderson Dance Pavilion, Sergeant Floyd Riverboat Museum and the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center. Downtown is also home for the largest historic theater in Iowa, the Orpheum Theater. On the northside is the Municipal Bandshell, located in Grandview Park, known for Sunday night concerts and Saturday in the Park music festival.
Nearby communities include; Dakota Dunes, SD, just west of Sioux City; North Sioux City, SD and Jefferson, SD and Elk Point, SD to the north as well as Vermillion, SD; Hinton, IA and Le Mars, IA to the north; Lawton, IA to the east; across the bridge to the south is South Sioux City, NE as well as Dakota City, NE; Sergeant Bluff, IA is a suburb on the southern edge of Sioux City.
The Sioux City Community School District is comprised of West High, North High and East High (grades 9-12);West Middle, North Middle and East Middle (6-8) and 19 elementary Schools (K-5). Private Schools include: Sioux City Bishop Heelan Catholic School (9-12) with 5 Elementary schools; Sioux City Christian School's (K-12). For advanced education: Morningside College, Briar Cliff University and Western Iowa Tech.
For Sports Fans: Sioux City Bandits are an indoor football team; Sioux City Explorers are a baseball team; Sioux City Musketeers are junior hockey team; Sioux City Roller Dames are non-profit roller derby corporation.
